Developing Canada's Oil Sands |
|
A multi-stakeholder committee of
representatives from government, the petroleum industry, First
Nations, and environmental organizations has been formed to develop
a "vision" for the future of the oil sands, and has begun public
consultation meetings across Alberta.
Everything about the oil sands is massive.
An estimated 175 billion barrels of recoverable crude reserves -
placing Canada second in the world behind Saudi Arabia - are held
within an area larger than the state of Florida. 1.1 million
barrels of bitumen are produced daily, and that figure is expected
to triple by 2016. Industry has announced approximately $87 billion
of investment in oil sands projects from 1996 through to 2016. |

RFK, Jr to address Chicago Energy Conference |
|
The Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (MEEA) is pleased to announce
Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. as its keynote speaker at the 2006 Midwest Energy
Solutions Conference. This year's theme is Empowerment so it seems
appropriate that one of the nation's most prominent defenders of the
environment would keynote this important conference. The conference will
be held September 27-28, with Mr. Kennedy's keynote scheduled for
September 27 at 9 a.m.
"We are thrilled to have Mr. Kennedy address our forum," stated Alecia
Ward, MEEA president. "His presence at the conference signifies the
importance of energy efficiency in these times of high fuel prices,
dwindling supply, and impending threat from global warming. The 2006
Energy Solutions Conference provides not only a forum but real solutions
to the energy problems faced by the Midwest and the nation."

Summit Co. Greenbuilt recycling facility |
|
Today, the Summit County Government and the High Country Conservation
Center celebrated a milestone when the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF)
became the first recycling facility in the country to be recognized by
the Green Building Initiative's (GBI) Green Globes(TM) environmental
assessment and rating system for commercial buildings.
GBI executive director Ward Hubbell presented local leadership with a
plaque recognizing the building's rating of Two Green Globes at the
facility's grand opening. The building, which is also the first facility
of its kind in the U.S. to be built green, was recognized for its merits
in heat recovery, the use of salvaged and recycled materials and the
maximization of daylighting.

Lugar's powerful energy address |
|
In the keynote address this morning to the Richard G. Lugar-Purdue
University Summit on Energy Security, at Purdue University, West
Lafayette, Ind., U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Dick
Lugar calls for dramatic and immediate action to address U.S. energy
vulnerability.
"Neither American oil companies, nor American car companies have shown
an inclination to dramatically transform their businesses in ways that
will achieve the degree of change we need to address a national security
emergency," Lugar says in the address. "Most importantly, the federal
government is not treating energy vulnerability as a crisis, despite an
increase in energy related proposals."
"To this end, the United States should adopt a national program that
would make virtually every new car sold in America a flexible fuel
vehicle. We should ensure that at least one quarter of filling stations
in America have E85 pumps. We should expand ethanol production to 100
billion gallons a year by 2025, a figure that could be achieved by
doubling output every five years. We should also create an approximate
$45 per barrel price floor on oil through a variable ethanol tax credit
to ensure that investments keep flowing to alternatives. And we should
enact stricter vehicle mileage standards to point automobile innovation
toward conservation. The plan I am proposing today would achieve the
replacement of 6.5 million barrels of oil per day by volume - the rough
equivalent of one third of the oil used in America and one half of our
current oil imports," he says.

Ontario looks to balance energy needs |
|
Electricity demand in Ontario peaked last week at an all-time high of
over 27,005 megawatts, prompting calls for greater energy conservation.
Increased energy efficiency standards and incentives for renewable
energy are some of the longer term measures being considered to
establish more of a balance between the province’s energy demand and
consumption.
Demand approached or exceeded 26,000 MW on three days last week, each
ranking as one of the top ten recorded days for power consumption, says
the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), which manages the
electricity system and wholesale market.
The province’s electricity supply system was boosted by favorable
conditions for hydroelectricity and the return to service of the 515-MW
Pickering nuclear unit 1. But even the increased supply is unable to
meet demand, and Ontario will continue to import electricity – around
2,000 MW on peak consumption days, says the IESO.

New tech allows roll your own biodiesel |
|
continued from The Cherry Creek News
“The FuelMeister II has many improvements over the original”, says Greg Springer, chief operating officer of Biodiesel Solutions. “It’s small enough to ship by UPS, but it can produce twice the daily output of the original. It’s easier to use due to quick disconnect connectors, pure drain tank and its modular design. It features the Direct Catalyst Injection(TM) lye dissolver lid (patent pending) which speeds up the chemical process.”
The FuelMeister has achieved national attention on the “Tired of Paying Too Much at the Pump? Become a Refiner - Make Your Own Biodiesel Fuel In Your Garage! No Kidding! (Episode #2005-13)” seen on the Power Blocks production of Trucks TV that airs each Saturday and Sunday on the Spike TV Network.
“Most of our customers are individuals who own diesel cars and trucks. They feel empowered by making biodiesel and saving over $2.00 per gallon. They know it’s better for the environment, their cars and their pocket books, and it makes them less dependent on the international energy market,” Springer continues. |

DOE to establish Biofuels centers |
|
U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Samuel W. Bodman announced today that DOE will spend $250 million to establish and operate two new Bioenergy Research Centers to accelerate basic research on the development of cellulosic ethanol and other biofuels. The Secretary made the announcement with Congressman Jerry Weller (IL-11th), local officials and biofuels stakeholders during a visit to Channahon, IL.
“This is an important step toward our goal of replacing 30 percent of transportation fuels with biofuels by 2030,” Secretary Bodman said. “The Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPAct) calls for the creation of new programs to improve the technology and reduce the cost of biofuels production. The mission of these centers is to accelerate research that leads to breakthroughs in basic science to make biofuels a cost-effective alternative to fossil fuels.” |

Western Gov's talk energy infrastructure |
|
Major Announcement On "Clean Energy Backbone" Expected By Western Governors At San Diego Summit On Monday
April 12, 2006 -- A major announcement on Western clean energy infrastructure project is expected to be unveiled next week by several Western Governors at the New Frontier Power Summit, a summit meeting on electricity transmission that kicks off on Monday April 17th at the Coronado Island Marriott Resort in San Diego.
The announcement will be related to the Frontier Line, a proposed $5-$7 billion high-voltage electric transmission line that would interconnect California, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming. The Governors of those states -- Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-CA), Kenny Guinn (R-NV), Jon Huntsman (R-UT) and Dave Freudenthal (D-WY) -- unveiled their vision for the Frontier Line one year ago.
